Say farewell to 2011 listening to well-known movies scores performed by northern Alabama’s premier performing arts group – HSO is Alabama’s oldest operating professional orchestra. Huntsville’s Von Braun Center is home to the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra – a wonderful place for a festive beginning to 2012.

The Von Braun Center is also home to Huntsville’s Broadway Theatre League. With an exciting fall and winter schedule, residents and visitors to Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley area enjoy the best of professional live theatre. VBC hosts Shrek the Musical in November, with 2012 bringing shows like Rock of Ages in February and My Fair Lady in March.

A delightful city, a visit to Dothan during the holidays is magical. The Dothan Civic Center hosts the Southeast Alabama Dance Company performing The Nutcracker for the holidays. Join SEADAC at the Civic Center December 2nd through the 4th for a festive holiday performance. The Music South Holiday Season Concert is at Dothan’s Civic Center December 6th. Celebrate the holidays with the Atlanta Pop’s Orchestra performing classic holiday selections.

Birmingham-Southern College hosts the 2012 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships in February. Sports fans gather at the Bill Battle Coliseum on the BSC campus for the action February 24th through the 26th.

Samford University, in the Homewood suburb of Birmingham, entertains sports fans with Bulldog Athletic teams in 17 Southern Conference sports. Men’s and women’s basketball heats up the court at the Pete Hanna Center. Close to downtown Birmingham, the University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers play their 34th basketball season at UAB Barlow Arena.

The natural beauty of Noccalula Falls to the adrenalin rush of treasure hunting at the Mountain Top Flea Market make the town of Gadsden and Etowah County, northeast of Birmingham, a nice getaway. Don’t miss the Gone With the Wind exhibition at Mary G Hardin Center for Cultural Arts. Gone With the Wind at 75: A Diamond Jubliee runs through December 23rd, featuring the largest display of GWTW artifacts ever mounted in the US.

Southeast Alabama’s Dothan, self-proclaimed as “The Peanut Capital of the World”, anchors the region as a business and commercial hub. Home of November’s National Peanut Festival, Dothan is the center of peanut production in the US. Also home to Ft Rucker the Dothan area economy is well diversified.
