Universities in Southern AL
Tigers, Trojans & Jaguars
University of Auburn
Featuring an enrollment of almost 30,000 students across the nearly 2,000-acre campus, Auburn houses a collection of must-see historic buildings, including Samford Hall, which dates back to the mid 19th century.
Any write-up of Auburn would be incomplete without mention of the former national champion Auburn Tigers football team. True, they dominate this region of AL during the fall, playing home games at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
And when its not football season, Auburn’s 18 other varsity teams serve as local entertainment, competing in the NCAA’s Southeastern Conference. Feel free to learn the words to “War Eagle,” the Auburn fight song in preperation for your campus visit.
Not far from Auburn, the city of Troy is home to quite a large university all its own – the aptly named Troy University, home to roughly 20,000 students, features a 650-acre rural campus, beautifully set among a wealth of oak trees and rolling hills. Troy campus tours are available year-round, so feel free to explore the region any time you’d like.
If you’re looking for some excitement during your visit, any one of the Trojan’s 18 varsity teams will surely provide the thrills of college athletics. Too, the school’s music programs are considered must-see entertainment, like the “Sound of the South” marching band.
Speaking of the south, the University of South Alabama, found south of Troy – like, way south – is one of the state’s larger, more populated colleges. The school, set in the coastal city of Mobile, is most known as a research university, offering a variety of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees across its 10 colleges.
During a campus visit, be sure to check out some of the local events on campus, including art exhibits at the USA Marx Library, performances at the Laidlaw Performing Arts Center, or the variety of South Alabama Jaguars athletic events taking place year-round. Football games, for instance, are held at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, where the Jaguars hold a Sun Belt Conference rivalry with Troy University.
