Athens State University
Aside from being the only two-year upper division college in Alabama, Athens State University is recognized as one of the most historic colleges in AL – Founders Hall and the Athens State College Historic District are proud members of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
To the east, the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University was established in 1875, yet has since grown into an 880-acre suburban campus featuring an enrollment of over 5,000 students.
If you'll be visiting the Huntsville-Madison area, first be sure and don some maroon and white, then check out some of the historic architecture in the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University Historic District – nearly 30 buildings make up this 290-acre part of the campus, which was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
It’s not all history and academia here, though. In fact, students here love their AAMU Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, comprised of 15 varsity teams competing in the NCAA Division I Southwestern Athletic Conference. And if you’re visiting in October, don’t miss the Magic City Classic. The annual football game pits AAMU against their in-state conference rivals, Jackson's Alabama State University, and is nearly 100 years old.
Not far from AAMU, the University of Alabama Huntsville, a top-rated university in its own right, enrolls nearly 10,000 students across its 350-acre urban campus. Although UAH might not feature the history some its counterparts do, it does stand as one of the state’s highest nationally ranked colleges, specifically in engineering, nursing, and scientific research.
Athletically, UAH features 18 varsity programs, most notably the UAH Chargers ice hockey team – one of only two Division I ice hockey teams in the region, and the only D-I team at UAH.
