Visiting Huntsville & Northern Alabama
As winter weather wanes and a new spring begins to bloom, northern Alabama is arguably at its most beautiful. Outdoor activities abound and communities from Huntsville and Madison to Russellville and Cullman are great places to find a sense of Southern Hospitality. This season, visitors are welcomed with a wealth of special events, festivals, and family-friendly activities.
West of Madison and south of Athens, Decatur’s already-vibrant downtown becomes a mecca for shopping, art, music, culture, and more on the third Thursday of every month, when area galleries, restaurants and venues open up to showcase local artists and vendors. Be there early to take it all in – Third Thursday fun starts at 6 p.m.
It’s a food-centric affair on March 26th in Huntsville. The 2016 Downtown Dish Huntsville brings the Madison/Huntsville’s Downtown Historic District to life for three street Saturdays. Make a food tour out of it by hopping from one restaurant or specialty shop to the next. You might also want to skip breakfast – things get going around 11 a.m. each Saturday.
Car guys and gals gear up for the 2016 Cars & Bikes Off the Square event on April 30th. Downtown Athens hosts the fuel-injected fun, which features antique, classic, and unique automobiles, along with live music and other entertainment. It all revs up at 8 a.m.
Spring time means fishing season is picking up in northern Alabama, and on May 14th, anglers have an opportunity to get competitive for a good cause. The 2016 Relay For Life Bass Fishing Tournament invites you to cast a line at Ingalls Boat Harbor, while a variety of onshore festivities are fun even if you don’t feel like fishing.
Decatur visitors look to the skies on May 28th and 29th. The 2016 Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Festival fills the air above Decatur’s Point Mallard Park with color, as the grass below play host to tons more fun. Balloon races, arts and crafts, live entertainment, and more – there’s something for just about everyone, beginning at 6 a.m. both days.
