Visiting Huntsville & Northern Alabama

The travel landscape across northern Alabama during summer and into early fall is wide open. Outdoor adventures, rounds of golf along the RTJ Golf Trail, and even some Civil War history – from Athens to Russellville, you’ll find just the ticket throughout Alabama’s northern region.

When you plan your visit to northern AL, be sure a stay in Decatur is in the cards. Not only is it home to some of the premier attractions in the state, like Point Mallard Park, the Princess Theatre, and the Old State Bank, it also hosts a number of excellent events. On August 12th and 13th, you can check out the North Alabama Youth Rodeo – see these youngsters perform a number of rodeo events at the Morgan County Celebration Arena.

Make you way to Ingalls Harbor near downtown Decatur on the weekend of September 17th for the annual Riverfest. Officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, this BBQ cook-off is a premier event during summer in northern AL. Live music, activities for the kids, and more award winning BBQ than you could imagine eating – all at Decatur Riverfest.

Directly south of Decatur, the city of Cullman proves to be another top destination in northern AL. Plan your visit to Cullman for late September and check out the Cullman County Fair. From September 22nd to October 1st, the Cullman Lions Club presents this annual array of rides, games, food, and more, all held at the Cullman Fairgrounds.

If your visit to the region is planned for early October, you’re in luck! October 5th through 9th, Cullman Oktoberfest is the place to be. Cullman Oktoberfest events are held at the Festhalle, and the Cullman County Museum. The Burgermeister Ball is one of the highlights at Cullman Oktoberfest, as is the Cullman Charity Bed Race, October 8th, and the Miss Oktoberfest contest.

Make the most of your stay in Madison, the charming city just west of Huntsville, with a visit to the Madison Street Festival. A fun, can’t-miss event held in historic downtown Madison, the Madison Street Festival is held each year on the first Saturday in October; don’t miss the car show, live music, Artist Alley, and the Children’s Area.
