Athens State University
Founded in 1822, Athens State University is a public, two-year institute – the only one in the state – set in Athens in northern Alabama. Formerly Athens Female Academy, the school has an enrollment of 3,500 students, and features the Alabama Center for the Arts.
The institute is home to the Athens State College Historic District – a U.S. Historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. As Alabama's oldest college, many buildings like the Beaty-Mason House, Brown Hall, and others, come with a good amount of historical significance.
