Major Universities in AL
'Bama, Auburn & More
The Yellowhammer State is, interestingly enough, mostly crimson and auburn – with a touch of gold, black, maroon, and forest green, depending on your perspective.
But no matter the color, Alabama is home to a collection of prestigious universities – from as far north as Decatur to as far south as Gulf Shores – enticing potential students and visitors year-round with historic campus tours and thrilling college sporting events.
In central AL, the cities of Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Homewood feature four-year institutions like the University of Alabama (UA), the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB), and Samford University. If it’s the ‘Bama you’re after, “Roll Tide” is practically Tuscaloosan for “hello.”
To the south, it’s much of the same, but try and avoid claiming allegiance to the Crimson Tide as much as possible, as the University of Auburn, hated rivals of the Tide, highlight a collection of tier one schools in this region.
Other southern AL schools include Alabama State University (ASU) in Montgomery, Troy University in Troy, which is the largest institution in the state with four campuses, and the University of Southern Alabama (USA) in the coastal metro of Mobile.
And finally, proudly representing northern Alabama, the top-rated University of Alabama Huntsville (UAH) rounds out a short-but-sweet list of colleges that includes Athens State University (ASU) and the Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU). Rivalries aren’t nearly as pronounced in this region, but cities like Huntsville and Athens have plenty of school spirit all the same.
